Dargans Creek Canyon

February 2004

Trip Notes

These Dargans Creek photos are taken over two separate trips in February 2004. On the second trip I took a tripod with me, so got a few better shots in the main part of the canyon.

Dargans Creek Canyon is a small, short, and fairly easy but very nice canyon, south of Bells Line of Road, near Clarence in the Blue Mountains.

The upper section of the creek above the canyon is dammed in two places, creating a water reservoir in two sections, that was used in the past to supply water for steam trains passing on the nearby Blue Mountains train line.

The lower and larger of the two reservoirs has a big water jump of about 10 metres from a vertical rock face into very deep water.

Access to the creek below the reservoir is easiest via an old steel staircase near the dam wall. A walking track on the right hand bank avoids the scrubby first part of the creek.

There's a bit of creek walking for a while before the creek begins to become a canyon. There's a few small climb downs along the way, most had fixed ropes at the time of these trips.

The canyon proper is really nice, with a few swim sections and a dark, almost tunnel like section towards the end.

Shortly after the tunnel section, there's a final swim and then it opens out and a side creek drops in on the right. From here it wouldn't be hard to return back up the canyon, but we chose to exit via the side creek.

There was a fixed rope for the climb up the small waterfall into the side creek, which was a bit easier than having to scramble up a log. Then from above the waterfall there's a tree with steel spikes, making it fairly easy to climb up out of the creek onto the ledge above, then a well worn trail back to the reservoir.

Back at the reservoir, swimming and water jumps are a great way to spend the afternoon. The big water jump is serious fun if you're brave enough!  : )
