Sydney 24 Hour

(the first 24 Hour MTB event in NSW)

22 - 23 May 2004

Some photos from the first Sydney 24 Hour, held at Dargle Farm near Windsor in Sydney's west.

I rode in a team of 6 for the event, the Tooheys Old Fellas, and we took it pretty easy. Plenty of BBQs and beers and relaxation between laps, and on Saturday night after putting in a night lap each, we watched DVDs by the camp fire on a laptop before settling in for a sleep while the serious competitors rode on through the night.

The course was only 10km long, but very tough for an endurance event. Plenty of tight technical singletrack (much of it through deep fine sand), one nasty climb that had most riders walking, and a tricky but super fast (if you were brave) descent near the end.

The weather was about as perfect as it could have been, and the race organisation was excellent. The event centre had everything from high speed battery charging, bike washing, plenty of food, coffee, live video feed from the course playing a big screen. There were live bands and DJs playing into the night. And even unlimited free hot showers available all weekend, how good is that!
